All About Cash Back Credit Cards
Cash Back credit cards have a lot of benefits. With proper use of them, a cardholder can signficantly improve the quality of their life, while increase personal cash flow and providing enhanced financial stability. One of the best ways a cardholder can tap into the benefits of a Cash Back Credit Card is by using it for all of their purchases and redeem their rewards for cash back savings.
You have a choice when it comes to which credit card you use, and as such you should receive some sort of reward for your spending. There are many different cash back reward programs available, designed for different sorts of consumers with different spend levels. There is a program for everyone, as of course, everyone could use a little more cash.
While cash back cards are extremely popular, most consumers don't use them properly - either because they don't know how to or they never took the time read all the details behind their cash back card. Each cash back card has detailed terms, and a proper maximization of the rewards can lead to the most cash back to the card holder.
To maximize the cash back to the cardholder, users should keep the following points in mind:
- Cash back is usually offered as a percentage back on their spending. Most consumers natrually look for the highest percentage cash back on their spending. Although this is probably the most important feature of the card, there are a variety of ways the Card Issuer can calculate the cash back.
- Beware of those cards that offered tiered cash back - for example, they might offer 0.25% cash back on the first $5,000 of annual spending on the card, then maybe 1.25% cash back on spending over $5,000 per year. Think about what your usual spending patterns are before choosing a card - if you spend smaller amounts, you might be better off with a card that gives you 1% back on ALL of your spending rather than a tiered amount. For example, if you spend $6,000 annually on your credit card ($500 per month), then in the first example with the 0.25%/1.25% tier, you would recieve $25 cash back, but if the card offers 1% on all spending, you would receive $60. That is a big difference.

- Sometimes card issuers offer higher cash back on a particular kind of purchase or if you purchase from a particular kind/brand of retailer. Think about where you normally shop before signing up - if you do not own a car there is no reason to sign up for cash back with a card that only offers rebates on gas. Or for a card that only offers rebates on airline ticket purchases for an airline that doesnt even fly from an airport near your hometown. Once you have analyzed your spending patterns, you can best match the card to your purchases to maximize your rewards.
- A close look at conversion rates is important when trying to maximize rewards. Many card issuers offer you cash rebates, and also offer you the ability to convert those rebates into coupons at your favorite stores - often at an increased amount (conversion ratio). This can be an easy way to double your cash back bonus and further maxmize your rewards.
- Look for Bonus Awards - some card issuers offer bonuses if you wait until you have accumulated a certain amount of cash back
- Avoid Fees. Some cash back credit cards charge fees, and it is important to read all the terms and conditions of the credit card before applying. Some card issuers charge hidden fees that can add up and even exceed the cash back that a cardholder would normally receive.
There are many cash back cards offered in the market. A strong understanding of the above points will greatly help the consumer in choosing the right card for their needs. If used properly, a cash back card can provide much additional cash to the cardholder!
